Fauldhouse, West Lothian
Located 9 miles (14 km) southwest of Livingston in West Lothian, Fauldhouse was first mentioned in 1523
as Fawlhous and began to prosper in the 18th century with the discovery of coal. In the late 18th century
the discovery of ironstone by the Wilsontown Iron Co. helped increase the population, as did the discovery
in 1835 of the 'slatey ironstone' exploited by the Shotts Iron Co.. Whinstone was also quarried here for
Edinburgh housing and a railway line was established in the 1860s.
